WHU-D3 | USS Sumner | DD-692 | 1/96 | 47" | 5 1/16" | 199.00 |
The Sumner class destroyers were developed from the previous FLETCHER class to carry the new 5" /38 cal. twin dual purpose gun mounts that were designed for destroyer use. These new mounts were being mounted on almost all new classes of U.S. Navy warships and were effective in the anti-aircraft and surface engagement roles. By putting the 5" twin mounts on destroyers, this would add one more barrel to their main battery on almost the same displacement.
The hull for this class was widened one foot to increase stability and fuel storage. Our hull has shaft exits and strut locations molded in. A set of arrangement plans also accompanies this hull. There is a fittings and weapons set available for this hull.

The Gearing class destroyers were based on the previous SUMNER class . A 14 foot section was added to the midships area at frame 110 to improve stability, increase interior volume and fuel storage for the greater range that was required for operating with the fast carrier task forces that were ranging across the Pacific Ocean in WW II. Although only a few of these ships saw action during the war, it was a tribute to their builders that some of these are still serving in foreign navies. This hull has shaft exits and strut locations molded in. A set of arrangement plans also accompanies this hull.

WHU-D 4B | USS Joseph P. Kennedy JR | DD-850 | 1/96 | 48 5/16" | 5 1/16" | $ 199.00 |
During the late 1950's the large World War Two built US Navy destroyer force was reaching midlife for most of ships then in service and new building programs could not replace these ships economically so a plan was devised to upgrade most of the ships in both the USS Allen M. Sumner DD-692 and USS Gearing DD-710 class. The new modernization's referred to as the FRAM, Fleet Rehabilitation And Modernization, Program required that the destroyers be taken into shipyards and be rebuilt and refurbished, this included removal of almost all of the superstructure and a new designed structure built in its place. In most of the ships the armament consisted of 2 5" twin mounts, an 8 cell Asroc launcher amidships and MK-32 triple torpedo tubes on the forward deckhouse where the #2 5" gun used to be. The Kennedy is now a Museum / Memorial ship in Fall River Massachusetts. This hull has shaft exits and strut locations molded in. A set of arrangement plans also accompanies this hull.
This package includes the hull, plans, and 5" gun set. Also included are cast polymer and cast metal fittings and weapons. Please note; this is not a complete kit, running gear, decks and building materials not included.

WHU-D 5 | USS Ward | DD-139 | 1/96 | 39 1/4" | 3 5/8" | Temporarily out of production for re-mastering |
The USS Ward was one of those famous, flush deck, four piper destroyers built for World War I service. These ships served in the US Navy from 1918 through the end of the second world war. In 1940, 50 destroyers were turned over to England, and given the names of towns common to both US and England. They served as convoy escorts and a variety of other roles throughout the war. Between 1945 and 1947 virtually all of the survivors of this numerous class were scrapped or sunk as targets, showing their age and the amount of wear and tear inherent in wartime. The Ward herself gained fame the morning of December 7, 1941 when she fired upon and sank a Japanese midget submarine at Pearl Harbor, firing the first American shot of that fateful day. This hull comes with porthole locations, side rub rail and shaft/strut locations molded in, and comes with a set of plans.

WHU-D 15 | USS Edson | DD-931 | 1/96 | 52 1/4" | 5 5/8" | $ 219.00 |
The Edson was one of the 18 Forest Sherman (DD-931) class of destroyers built during the 1950's. These ships were built to replace some of the already aging, large fleet of war built destroyers, which were no longer large enough to carry many of the new weapons needed to face the large Soviet submarine force. All of the ships of this class were retired during the 1980's along with the 4 ships of the class converted to Guided Missile Destroyers of the DDG-31 class. 3 have been preserved as museum ships, though there is some talk that the Barry (DD-933) may be scrapped due to poor material condition. The Edson has been on display in New York at the Intrepid museum - her fate is uncertain at this time.. Another unit, the Turner Joy (DD-951) is a museum in Bremerton, Washington. Our hull has the shaft exits and strut locations molded in, and comes with a set of arrangement plans.

The USS MORTON was one of the Forest Sherman DD-931 class ships that was converted to an ASW destroyer, these ships had their #2 5" gun mount replaced by an Asroc anti submarine rocket launcher as well as having their 3" twin gun mounts removed. Due to the increasing Soviet submarine threat, the US Navy started converting several destroyers of the Fletcher, Sumner and Gearing classes into specialized ASW ships and redesignated them into DDE's, as these ships got older the Navy started looking more at its larger destroyers that had limited ASW capability and made up plans to convert all of the ships of the Sherman class that had not been slated for DDG upgrades This hull has the shaft and strut locations marked out in the hull and comes with general arrangement plans.

The 31 ships of the Spruance class are the largest destroyers built by any navy to date, and the first class of US Navy ships to employ Gas Turbine propulsion, which gives them a top speed, according to the Navy, over "over 30 knots". Several ships of this class have been modified with a Mk 41 missile launching system forward in place of the ASROC launcher and magazine. They have also been modified with radar and mast improvements, notably the USS Radford. Several have also been decommissioned at this time. Our hull features the large bow mounted sonar dome, shaft exits and strut locations molded in as well as rudder locations. It also comes with a set of plans that shows some of the various configurations that these ships have gone through.
Special Note: When you order this hull, we will send out our DD-963/CG-47 hull, which features a raised bulwark forward. The modeler will need to remove this bulwark to make a DD-963.
